Things to do
Kilsby Cottage provides an ideal base to explore this incredibly beautiful, unspoilt, peaceful part of Wales either on foot, by bike, on horseback or by car.
Walking: This area is a walkers paradise. There are many miles of footpaths along way-marked routes ranging from a gentle afternoon stroll to gruelling 25 mile hikes, or use the OS map and plot your own route. You can walk all day without seeing a car, a house or even another person. Dont forget your camera and your packed lunch.
Mountain Biking: Llanwrtyd Wells, set in the heart of the Cambrian Mountains of Mid Wales, is an absolute gem of a place for cyclists. This small town can lay claim to being the birthplace of mountain biking in the UK way back in 1985. It is unique in the UK in offering on and off road, traffic free cycling on way-marked routes to suit all ages and abilities from the winding lane and track rides along the enchanting Irfon valley well suited to family excursions to renowned road routes such as the seriously challenging, switch back ascent of the Devils Staircase. For the real enthusiast we now have 3 purpose built single-track routes at Coed Trallwm which are linked to existing routes - these are technically challenging and a lot of fun!
Pony Trekking, another popular activity, can also claim to have its origins here. In 1956 the Llanwrtyd Wells Pony Trekking Association was formed, the first in Wales. There are wonderful opportunities for riding and trekking to suit all levels of ability in the hills and lanes beyond the town.
Fishing: The Upper Irfon Beat of the Upper Wye Passport fishing runs in front of Kilsby and we can offer reduced rate permits at £5 per day for this challenging wild brown trout water. Llanwrtyd Wells is within easy travelling distance of some of the best fishing in Wales. Rivers such as the Wye, Irfon, Usk and Severn offer excellent trout and grayling with prolific sea-trout and salmon fishing available on the Towy. The Abernant Lake Hotel just outside the town has permits for coarse fishing in their lake and trout fishing on the river, and the larger stillwaters of the Elan Valley offer excellent brown trout sport, while boat fishing for rainbows is available at Llyn Clywedog. All of these great waters are within an hours drive from Llanwrtyd! A local fishing factsheet is available on request - please send cheque for £1 payable to C.Cooper with an A5 SAE.
Golf: There are four 18 hole golf courses nearby located at Builth Wells, Llandrindod Wells, Brecon and Cradoc. All of these courses are less than an hour away and set in magnificent countryside with breathtaking scenery and Red Kites and Buzzards soaring overhead. www.heartofwalesgolfbreaks.co.uk
Bird Watching: The conservation of the Red Kite in Mid Wales is a well - known success story and there cant be a visitor to the area who doesnt marvel at the sight of this magnificent bird. There are other birds of pray to be seen however, Peregrine Falcons and Goshawks for example, not to mention a whole host of smaller birds, from the tiny Goldcrest to the splendid Greater Spotted Woodpecker. If youre very lucky you might see a kingfisher near the river on the lookout for its next meal, or the delightful dipper. If youre not interested in birds when you get here, you surely will be when you leave.
Painting: This beautiful landscape, the ever - changing colours and the exquisite wild flowers are an artists dream. What could be more relaxing than to spend an afternoon painting and what better way to take your memories away with you than as a piece of your own artwork.
Llanwrtyd Wells is also well known for the World Bog Snorkelling Championships, the famous Man v Horse Race, Beer Festivals and the annual Gourmet Food Festival.
It is an ideal touring centre, surrounded by features with a lasting appeal to the visitor seeking a wide variety of unique environmental and historical attractions.
Places to Eat:
Llanwrtyd Wells is the Gourmet Centre of Mid Wales. There is high quality food to suit all tastes and pockets ranging from good pub grub to restaurants with food prepared by nationally acclaimed award winning chefs including one with a Michelin Star.
